Installing Robot LPAR 2

Last Updated:

Before You Begin

Read these instructions completely before you begin.

The Robot LPAR installation process creates or changes the two user profiles: RBTUSER and RBTADMIN. RBTADMIN has the attributes of a QSECOFR profile. RBTUSER has attributes like QPGMR. Directory entries are automatically added for the RBTADMIN and RBTUSER profiles. These profiles were created for the following reasons:

  • They satisfy requests from corporate auditors that our objects be owned differently from IBM objects.

  • They allow us to build a secure product for your environment.

  • They isolate HelpSystems products from IBM changes to the QPGMR or QSECOFR profile defaults.

Note: If you have made any manual changes to the RBTUSER or RBTADMIN user profiles and their authorities, these changes will be lost with any product installation or conversion.

Software Requirements

Operating System V7R1 or higher (see below)
Licensed Programs

Portable App Solutions Environment (PASE):

  • For V7R1: 5770SS1; option 33

  • For V7R2: 5770SS1; option 33

  • For all:

    • 5733SC1; option *BASE; IBM Portable Utilities for IBM i

    • 5733SC1; option 1; OpenSSH, OpenSSL, zlib

Other Requirements

You must install Robot LPAR on at least one partition that communicates with the Hardware Management Console (HMC) in a partitioned environment. If you’re planning to use Robot LPAR to move devices between partitions, we recommend that you install it on each partition that will be involved in the movements.

Robot LPAR communicates directly with the HMC in a partitioned environment. To install Robot LPAR, you must know the HMC root user ID, HMC root password, managed system name, and the HMC host name.

Installing Robot LPAR

There are two parts to a Robot LPAR installation. The first part downloads everything to your PC and transfers objects to the IBM i. The second part is the actual installation on the IBM i. The two parts (PC and IBM i) are described in the following sections.

Part One (on the PC)

  1. Download the installer (setupLPAR2.exe) from the My Account page on our website. Double-click it to start it.

  2. On the Choose Components panel, select which components you want to install. For Robot LPAR, you'll likely use the default value (software for the IBM i). Click Install.

If you're only installing PC components (the Manuals), wait until the installation is complete, and click Finish. Then, skip the rest of these steps.

If you're installing to the IBM i, the Product Maintenance Window opens.

  3. On the Choose a Destination IBM i panel:

    1. Select or enter the alias for the IBM i or system address where you want to install Robot LPAR.

    2. Select Use secure connection if you want us to use FTPS (FTP over SSL) during the file transfer. The default FTPS secure port is 990.

Note: You can change the default FTPS port, but in order for the new port to still be secure, Use secure connection must be selected.

    3. Change the FTP (or FTPS) port number, if it's different from what's shown.

    4. Click Next.

  4. Enter a user profile that's a member of the user class *SECOFR and has at least the following special authorities: *ALLOBJ, *SECADM, *JOBCTL, and *IOSYSCFG. The user profile should have Limit capabilities set to *NO. This profile will be used to restore and copy objects, and for product maintenance on the IBM i. Then, click Next.

  5. Select Transfer Objects Only on the Processing Options panel. Then, enter the save file library where the objects will be saved (if you want to use a library other than the default HSSAVF). Click Next.

  6. Review the information on the Confirm Installation Information panel. Then, click Start.

  7. When the processing is complete, you have two choices:

    • If this is the only installation of Robot LPAR that you're doing, click Finish.

    • If you have other installations to do, click Restart Wizard. Then, return to step 3.

Note: If the Upload in Progress panel says Ended in Error, it means that the product upload could not complete properly. To find the reason the upload failed, click OK, then click View Logs and review your job log.

Follow the steps in the next section to install on the IBM i you identified above.

Part Two (on the IBM i)

  1. Execute the following command to display the Maintain HelpSystems Products menu:

Note: In the SAVFLIB parameter, change HSSAVF to the save file library name you used, if other than the default.

  2. Select option 1 from the Maintain HelpSystems Products menu to display the Install Products panel, which lists the Robot products not currently installed on your system.

If you'd like more information about a product and its features, enter a 3 next to the product name.

If you'd like to see the installation instructions, enter a 1 next to the product. The same information is displayed as you'll see in the "Before You Begin" and "After You Are Done" sections of this topic.

  3. When you're ready to start installing, enter a 2 next to Robot LPAR on the Install Products panel and press Enter.

The installation program installs LPAR, the RBTSYSLIB library (as needed), and two user profiles (RBTADMIN and RBTUSER). It adds RBTSYSLIB to the system portion of your library list, if required.

  4. The Save File Library field on the Robot LPAR (LPRINSTALL) panel shows the save file library you used in step 1. Make any necessary changes to the output queue or confirm the default listed (*JOB), then press Enter.

When the installation completes, follow the steps below to enter the security code. Also, read the After You Are Done section for additional information.

Entering the Security Code

After you install Robot LPAR, you must enter a permanent security code in order to use it. If you haven't received a permanent security code, contact your Regional Sales Manager.

  1. Execute the following command on the IBM i to open the Installed Robot Products panel:

  2. Enter option 1 by Robot LPAR to open the LPAR Security Code panel.

  3. Paste your new security code into the LPAR Security Code field.

  4. Press Enter.

After You Are Done

Keep the following items in mind as you start to use Robot LPAR:

  • To access the product’s Main Menu on the IBM i, execute the command RBO on a command line to display the Robot Automated Operations Solution panel. Then, enter option 18 for Robot LPAR.

If you don’t have RBTSYSLIB in your library list, you can access the Robot LPAR Main Menu with the following command:

  • You can select option 2, General System Defaults, from the Robot LPAR Main Menu to change the password for the RBTLPAR profile to make access to the RBTLPAR profile more secure.

    • Changing the password using the General System Defaults panel affects Robot LPAR only. You also must change the password on the RBTLPAR profile on the IBM i. Otherwise, you cannot access the RBTLPAR profile from Robot LPAR.

    • You also can specify a different profile other than RBTLPAR. If you want to use a different profile, contact Robot Technical Support for more information.

  • Select option 3, System Setup, from the Main Menu and verify that the name of the managed system and the HMC host are correct.

Note: If you change these names here, you also must change them on the HMC.

  • Set up Robot LPAR on your system as described in the Robot LPAR User Guide. If you didn't install the manuals on your PC, you can download them from our website.

  • The above installation process restored three libraries to your system for use during installation: HSBOOT, RBTCDRLIB, and HSSAVF. We don't remove them from your system in case you're doing multiple installations. You can delete them when you're finished.
