Houston Orthopedic & Spine Hospital (located in Houston, Texas) had a data reporting problem.

They needed a better way to bring information together. And they found it with Sequel Data Access, data analysis and reporting software from Fortra.

The Data Reporting Challenge

Data is crucial to healthcare organizations—and Houston Orthopedic Hospital is no exception.

They store data on HMS Financial and HMS Clinical (both IBM i-based), CQI Solutions (on Windows), and Microsoft SQL Server. But it was taking too long to report on timely information, like patient care, billing, and payroll.

Plus, if they wanted a report, they had to go to a programmer—and wait for that programmer to have time to gather the data for them.

It just didn’t make sense anymore.

Sequel Helped Them Automate Data Reporting

Sequel helped Houston Orthopedic Hospital bring all of their IBM i and Windows data together for seamless reporting. They can even use scripts to automatically deliver reports and data to those who need it.

There’s no more need to ask a programmer. Instead, anyone can use Sequel to gather, analyze, and manipulate data.

Anything not ‘in the box’ usually becomes a programming request, which means time, money, and hassle. We use Sequel to avoid all that. And to be honest, Sequel really works. I don’t get emails from users saying, ‘Hey, I didn’t get my report this morning?’

And, thanks to Sequel, it’s easier to comply with healthcare initiatives, like the Electronic Health Records health care bill. This provides government funding to increase the adoption of healthcare software to create and maintain electronic health care records. Hospitals can get federal money to recoup some of the cost of the software.

Of course, they don’t just write you a check—you have to prove you’re using the software correctly. There’s a list of required metrics you must meet. For example, you might have to demonstrate that you have electronically recorded medication orders for thirty percent of patients.

Using Sequel, we create reports that indicate, on a patient-by-patient basis, whether we’ve met a metric. Using Sequel, we constructed detailed reports for each metric and automatically send the reports to the clinical team twice a day. That really helps us with healthcare initiatives.

Today They Get the Full Picture (and Their Time Back)

With Sequel, Houston Orthopedic Hospital automatically delivers data to the people who need it. IT staff save time and employees across the business get faster access to the data reports they need.

Sequel reports help the clinical coding team be more productive. The government has a lot of billing standards and the coders help the hospital bill insurance properly. One of the reports that’s automatically created in Sequel is a daily list of new cases. The coders also get a report of outstanding billing issues, and another report indicating how many cases they have finished. They use these reports to stay on pace and save time each day.

Plus, Sequel helps IT respond faster to the management team’s request for special reports. IT quickly creates the reports in Sequel and delivers them to management in Excel. From there, the management team can see a high-level summary of things like the coding groups’ workload. Or they can dig deeper into the data for detailed analysis.

Kevin Varner, an IT Project Manager, says, “Sequel has helped us easily pull numbers and compare them to the metric to see where we need to adjust processes or capture additional documentation. Our team is more productive at accessing data. If we did not have the reports, someone would have to check each chart manually—it’s much faster to run a Sequel view.”

Houston Orthopedic Hospital also took advantage of Sequel training to help their users take advantage of Sequel right away.

The reality is that non-technical people can use Sequel because it’s pretty straightforward. Many people here can easily create a report and be confident about the result. I’m very pleased with Sequel—it’s a great tool for us.
