Sixth Annual Marketplace Survey Shows IBM i Platform Remains a Cornerstone of Optimizing Essential Business Operations

MINNEAPOLIS Jan. 28, 2020—HelpSystems announced today that its sixth annual IBM i Marketplace Survey Results demonstrate IT professionals’ unwavering reliance on this technology mainstay when it comes to supporting critical business functions. In fact, year after year more than 90 percent of respondents state they believe IBM i provides better return on investment than other server options.

“The level of support and trust businesses place in their IBM infrastructure is noteworthy, and the platform’s hybrid and cloud-based offerings are gaining traction,” said Tom Huntington, Executive Vice President of Technical Solutions, HelpSystems. “Sixty-five percent of those providing survey input plan to expand or maintain their IBM i footprint in 2020. These organizations are actively developing programs on the platform, with 72 percent relying on it to run more than half of their core business applications. We also saw a significant increase in POWER9 server usage that mirrors what we’ve been hearing from customers as they invest in modernizing their infrastructures with the latest high-performance capabilities.”

In this year’s survey, more than 500 global IT professionals gave in-depth insights on their challenges and successes regarding the ever-evolving world of technology and the tools they use every day. The survey delves into the obstacles administrators, managers, developers, and leaders face in tackling common IT issues. These run the gamut from keeping up with ever-changing security and automation practices to business continuity initiatives and staff skillset deficits.

When it comes to the challenges keeping these experts up at night, 77 percent ranked security at the top of their list. However, the data shows the difficulty of balancing ongoing business efficiency with applying the right level of security controls, which is especially important to those seeking compliance with security mandates. This is compounded by an ongoing lack of security knowledge and skills within IT teams, which may explain why measures such as database encryption, multi-factor authentication, and antivirus software projects can’t seem to get off the ground.
