What is Robot/SAVE Error Resolution?

Starting in Robot/SAVE 9.0, the Operations Menu has had an option to help you resolve tape errors. Option 5, Data Center Error Resolution, allows you to see the errors that have occurred during a backup on a system in a data center.

The Error Resolution panel lists the errors that have occurred in the data center. The Error Message is a brief description of the error that occurred. The first part of the message is the name of the object that caused the error (for example, volume ID); the last part of the message text identifies the error. The Error Type describes the type of error that occurred. To restrict the display to only selected error types, press function key 9, Select Error Type.

To see the repair options for an error, enter a 1 next to the Error Message to display the Error Resolution or Volume Error Resolution panel.
Note: Volumes listed on the Error Resolution panel cannot be used again until the error condition is corrected.

Common error conditions

Volume VOL001 is in error

  • Cause:
    • Conflicting operations were performed on the same object (volume ID) on different systems in the data center.
    • A problem was found with the volume, for example, a bad header (the volume couldn’t be read).
  • Resolution:
    • Remove the volume from Robot/SAVE and discard it, or reinitialize the volume and add it back to Robot/SAVE.

Volume VOL002 contains unexpired data

  • Cause:
    • Robot/SAVE detected a volume containing unexpired data.
  • Resolution:
    • Robot/SAVE cannot use the volume if active files are found. You may need to remove the volume from the scratch pool or rotation and reinitialize it. Do this only if you need to write over the data before the volume expires.

Write-protected

  • Cause:
    • Robot/SAVE detected a write-protected volume.
  • Resolution:
    • Remove the volume from the tape drive and set write protection off.

Data management error

  • Cause:
    • The tape generated a data management error. This usually indicates a bad tape or a dirty tape drive.
  • Resolution:
    • Remove the tape from Robot/SAVE.

Save Media Type 3580 is in error

  • Cause:
    • A problem or conflict was found with the media type. The media type has been changed on one of the systems in the data center.
  • Resolution:
    • Compare the media type on all systems, and correct the one that was changed.

Repair Actions

Volume in Error

  • Press function key 8, Use This Data.

    • Removes the error condition allowing Robot/SAVE to use the volume again unless it is removed from the product.

Unexpired Data

Select from one of the following options:

  • Option 1, Ignore Unexpired Data. Place into the Scratch Pool.

    • Removes the error condition and places the volume in Robot/SAVE’s scratch pool.

    Note: Verify if the volume is attached to a backup set rotation. If the volume is attached to a backup set, the history of the data that was saved will be removed from Robot/SAVE’s archive and the volume will be placed back into the scratch pool. This option overrides the volume’s expiration date, allowing Robot/SAVE to overwrite any data even if the data has not yet expired.

    Caution: If your system is part of a Data Center, we recommend that you do not select option 1. With Robot/SAVE Version 9.19 or earlier, the volume contents could be overwritten unintentionally by any system that is part of the Data Center. With Robot/SAVE Version 9.20 and higher, selecting option 1 automatically reserves the volume to the current system, allowing only that system to use the volume.

  • Option 2, Assign the volume to a Backup Set Rotation.

    • Removes the error condition and assigns the volume to a backup set rotation.

    Note: Verify the backup set rotation to which the volume should be attached. The volume will be assigned to that backup set rotation. The data remains unexpired if the expiration date has not yet passed.

  • Option 3, Remove this error condition. The data is still unexpired.

    • Removes the error condition. The data remains unexpired if the expiration date has not yet passed.

Write protected

  • Option 1, Remove the error. Don’t forget to un-protect the tape if necessary.

    • Removes the error condition. The volume write protection will be checked the next time the volume is used.

Data management error

Select from one of the following options:

  • Option 1, Destroy the volume and delete it completely from Robot/SAVE.

    • Removes the error condition and removes the volume completely from Robot/SAVE.

  • Option 2, Remove the error. Next use of volume may cause this error again.

    • Removes the error condition, but does not remove the volume from Robot/SAVE. The volume could be used again for another save operation and the backup could fail again with the same error condition.

Media Type error

  • Press function key 8, Use This Data.

    • Removes the error condition allowing the volume to be used by Robot/SAVE after it rechecks the media type.
