Installing Robot/UPS

Product:
Robot/UPS

Before You Begin

Read these instructions completely before you begin.

If you have other Help/Systems products installed on your systems, you should be aware of the following:

  • If you have multiple System i or iSeries systems that are networked using Robot/NETWORK, you must update or convert Robot/NETWORK before installing Robot/UPS. You can update or convert one system at a time, but the Host system must be updated or converted first and all products on a system must be updated at the same time. Robot/NETWORK must be at the following release/modification levels or higher:
    • Robot/NETWORK Host R09M58
    • Robot/NETWORK Node R09M00
  • Robot/ALERT must be at release/modification level R05M00 or higher.

The Robot/UPS installation process calls a Help/Systems program to create or change the two Help/Systems user profiles, RBTUSER and RBTADMIN. The RBTUSER and RBTADMIN profiles were created for the following reasons:

  • They satisfy requests from corporate auditors that our objects be owned differently from IBM objects.
  • They allow us to build a secure product for your environment.
  • They isolate Help/Systems products from IBM changes to the QPGMR or QSECOFR profile defaults.

Note: If you have made any manual changes to the RBTUSER or RBTADMIN user profiles and their authorities, these changes will be lost with any product installation or conversion.

Robot/UPS changes the following system values: QUPSDLYTIM, QIPLDATTIM, QUPSMSGQ, and QPWRRSTIPL (not changed on System i systems).

Hardware Connections

Make sure there is a cable connecting your UPS hardware to your System i or iSeries system so that Robot/UPS can receive the power failure message. Check with your UPS vendor to ensure you are using the proper cable for your system.

Partitioned (LPAR) Systems

During installation on a partitioned system, you have the option to create a controlling partition. We recommend you do this. A controlling partition facilitates system setup; you can set up all partitions from the controlling partition. Without a controlling partition, you have to sign onto each system and set it up manually. You also can use the controlling partition to update the power actions on all partitions, which saves you from creating the same actions manually on each partition.

If you chose not to designate a controlling partition during installation, you can do so later. See the Robot/UPS User Guide for more information.

Partitioned iSeries Systems

On partitioned iSeries systems, Robot/UPS must be installed on the system’s primary partition first. Also, you must designate the primary partition as the Robot/UPS controlling partition. You do this by selecting the host name or IP address of the primary partition in the Controlling Partition Information field during installation. Record the host name and/or the IP address of the primary partition. You are required to enter this information during installation on all the other system partitions.

Partitioned System i Systems

On partitioned System i systems, it is your option to designate a controlling partition (recommended). To use a controlling partition: Decide which System i partition will be the controlling partition and install Robot/UPS on it first. Designate the partition the controlling partition by selecting the host name or IP address of the partition in the Controlling Partition Information field during installation. Record the host name and/or the IP address of the partition you select. You are required to enter this information during installation on all the other system partitions.

Non-Partitioned (Standalone) iSeries and System i Systems

There are no special installation requirements for iSeries and System i systems without partitions.

Installing Robot/UPS

  1. Sign on under a user profile that is a member of the user class *SECOFR and has at least the following special authorities: *ALLOBJ, *SECADM, *JOBCTL, and *IOSYSCFG. The user profile should have Limit capabilities set to *NO.
  2. End all Help/Systems products. The install process may stop the RBTSLEEPER subsystem, which is used by other Help/Systems products. Stopping RBTSLEEPER interrupts processing by these products.
  3. Make sure that the library QTEMP is in your library list before you start installing.
  4. Enter the following command to display the Maintain Help/Systems Products menu:
  5. RBTCDRLIB/HLPCDMENU

  6. Select option 1 from the Maintain Help/Systems Products menu to display the Install Products panel, which lists the Help/Systems products not currently installed on your system.
  7. If you would like more information about a product and its features, enter a 3 next to the product name.

  8. Option 1 on the Install Products panel displays the Install Instructions panel for the product; this is the same information included in the Before You Begin and After You Are Done sections of these instructions.
  9. When you are ready to start installing, enter a 2 next to Robot/UPS on the Install Products panel.
  10. The installation program installs Robot/UPS, the RBTSYSLIB library (as needed), and two user profiles (RBTADMIN and RBTUSER). It adds RBTSYSLIB to the system portion of your library list if required.

When the installation completes, read the After You Are Done instructions for any additional information or instructions.

After You Are Done

Enter the following command to display the Robot/UPS Main Menu:

RBTUPSLIB/RBTUPS

Set up Robot/UPS on your system as described in the Robot/UPS User Guide, beginning with the Getting Started section.

The installation procedure restored two libraries: RBTUPSLIB and RBTSYSLIB. If you have Robot/NETWORK installed on your system, a third library, RBNRBUMST, also was restored.

If you don’t already start RBTSLEEPER in your startup procedures, add the following command to the startup program for your system and recompile the program:

STRSBS RBTSYSLIB/RBTSLEEPER

From now on, every system IPL will start the Robot/UPS monitor.

Note: The Help/Systems installation process restored the following three libraries to your system for use during installation: HSBOOT, RBTCDRLIB, and HSSAVF. In case you are doing multiple installations, we do not remove them from your system. You can delete them when you have finished your installations.
