Where To Get Java

Java

You can download Java in two forms:

  • The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) contains the software needed to run a Java program.
  • The Java Developer Kit (JDK) contains the JRE and Java Developer Tools such as the Java Compiler, the Java Debugger, and documentation. This download is much larger than the JRE.

You must have a copy of the JRE installed before you can install and use Help/Systems Java-based software on non-Windows servers. To avoid using unnecessary space on your server, Help/Systems products only need the JRE. However, if your server already uses the JDK, you can use it to run our software.

Windows

On Windows-based systems, the Help/Systems product installer automatically installs the required version of the JRE for the product—there is no need to install additional Java software.

Linux

The bit-width of Java needs to match the bit-width of the kernel you are using. Use the command uname -m to determine which version of Java you need:

i686: Linux Intel/x86 32-bit: Download the Java 6 JRE for 32-bit Linux at http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html

x86_64: Linux Intel/x86 64-bit: Download the Java 6 JRE for 64-bit Linux at http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html

ppc64:  Linux PPC 64-bit: Download Java SE Version 6 for 64-bit IBM POWER at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux/download.html

AIX

The bit-width of Java needs to match the bit-width of the kernel you are using. Use the command ls -al /unix to determine whether your AIX system is using the 32-bit or the 64-bit kernel.

unix_32: AIX 32-bit: Download Java 6, 32-bit from http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/aix/service.html
unix_64: AIX 64-bit: Download Java 6, 64-bit from http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/aix/service.html

Note: You may need to install important operating system patches before you can install and use the Java software.

Solaris/SPARC

The bit-width of Java needs to match the bit-width of the kernel you are using. Use the command isainfo -b to determine which version of Java you need:

32: Download the Java 6 JRE for 32-bit Solaris at http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html

64: Download the Java 6 JRE for 64-bit Solaris at http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html

Note: You may need to install important operating system patches before you can install and use the Java software.

HP-UX

Download the Java 6 JRE from http://www.hp.com/go/java

Note: You may need to install important operating system patches before you can install and use the Java software.

OpenVMS
