Two operations classes added; Save when you take 4!
Help/Systems offers a suite of i5/OS operations classes designed to help new operations staff get up to speed quickly or give more experienced users a refresher. We’re expanding our operations training options by bringing back two System i operations classes that we haven’t offered in some time.
When you have a better understanding of operating system commands, you become a more valuable employee. Help/Systems offers:
- Work Management and Basic System Performance – Updated!
- Introduction to System i Backup and Recovery – Updated!
- Operations 101
- Understanding the IFS
- Understanding TCP/IP Communications
- i5/OS Security
- V6R1 Upgrade Planning
These online classes are offered in one- to two-hour segments over several days to make it easier to fit training into your schedule. They are all offered several times a year. Classes include hands-on exercises that let you use your skills immediately. If you miss a segment, you can make it up by listening to a recording when time permits.
Special Offer
Starting in January 2010, you can sign up for any four operations classes and get a 25% tuition discount.
Let’s look at the updated classes.
Work Management and Basic Performance Tuning
The work management class covers all the “pieces” that affect the performance of jobs on your system, such as subsystem descriptions, routing entries, job queues, and job classes. Find out how all these objects work together to get work done and make jobs run efficiently and smoothly. Learn how to monitor and manage subsystems for performance bottlenecks and fix areas that need tuning.
In a recent blog posting, Tom Huntington, Help/Systems Vice President of Technical Services, called work management “the secret” to lights out! It’s that important.
[Editor’s note: If you haven’t discovered Tom’s blog, visit www.helpsystems.com/blog/tomh to see what you’re missing.]
During the work management class, you’ll create a subsystem and all the components needed to run jobs. Then, the real fun begins. You’ll find out where your job’s priority comes from and what happens if you change it. You’ll learn what a memory pool is and how it affects the performance of your system. You’ll discover how to do basic monitoring and managing of your system with several performance management tools built in to the operating system. By the end of the class, it’s likely you’ll understand what had previously been a “mysterious” performance issue.
Backup and Recovery
To make a good backup plan, you start by thinking about what you would need to restore in the event of a disaster. Today, more than ever, your data is your business!
In two, 2-hour sessions, the backup and recovery class covers the following topics:
- System i Overview (including supported OS levels, System i data, and how applications affect data)
- The Five Ws (Why back up data; Where to store data; What data must be saved to guarantee successful business recovery; the Window of opportunity [or, how do 24/7 businesses back up their data?]; and What is your disaster recovery plan?)
- Save Commands
- Evaluating Backups
- Backup Tips
- What is your Business Backup Strategy?
- How do you Track Saved Data?
- Restore Commands
- Objects Not Restored
- Recovery Plan
- Recovery Tips
We hope you’ll make a commitment to learn more about the world of System i operations with us in 2010.
