Robot/UPS
Power failure management for your critical systems
Whether you have a single System i or you run your business
on a partitioned System i5, a loss of power means potential
disaster. You purchased UPS hardware, but to be truly
safe you need to automate the management of power outages.
You set up Robot/UPS by telling it how and when to shut
down your applications, systems, and partitions. You
can send system setup information and scheduled power
actions to all partitions on a system. It is as easy
to set up your partitioned system as it is to set up
a standalone system.
For that extra boost of confidence, you can run a simulation
to test your power-failed and power-restored schedules.
Why worry and risk everything when you can be sure—before
the power fails—that Robot/UPS will do exactly
what you told it to.
If Lightning Strikes...
Consider this: It is 1:12 a.m. The only lights in your
building are the exit lights and the lights on the
System i, which has hours of work yet to do. Then, lightning
strikes and the power goes out.
Robot/UPS takes control as soon as the System i switches
to UPS battery power. Robot/UPS executes each action
in the shutdown schedule at the appointed time. As you
specified, it sends messages, holds job queues, ends
subsystems, manages the shutdown of system partitions,
and executes any other procedures needed. Finally, with
plenty of time remaining, it shuts down the system.
Don’t worry about moving memory between partitions.
If memory has been moved to or from a partition, Robot/UPS
automatically recalculates the partition’s powerdown
time based on its new amount of memory.
At 2:25 a.m., power is restored. The System i IPLs, and
Robot/UPS begins your restoration schedule. It releases
held job queues, restarts subsystems, run commands, and
does any other procedures you specified. Order the FREE
Robot/UPS User Guide to learn more.
While The Batteries Recharge
If power fails again before the batteries are recharged,
your System i is still safe. Robot/UPS takes control,
altering its schedule to ensure the shutdown completes
before battery power runs out.
The next day, on the Good Morning Report, you see the
night’s events, from power failure through complete
error-free restoration. Robot/UPS protected your system.
