Solution 6
Performance Tuning and Partition Management
Your goal should be to tune system (partition)
performance with Robot/AUTOTUNE, the performance manager.
Robot/AUTOTUNE optimizes performance by adjusting pool sizes,
activity levels, run priorities, and time slices within a
partition. It employs different
user-defined sets of control values, or environments, to
meet differing day and night needs. You should install it on each partition
you want to tune.
Performance monitoring is also a work management concern.
When you buy Robot/AUTOTUNE, performance tuning software,
you automatically get Robot/MONITOR, performance monitoring
software. It collects performance statistics (CPU%, DASD%,
transactions-per-minute, and response time) on a timed
interval and lets you activate alert mechanisms if the
collected statistics exceed your thresholds. Robot/AUTOTUNE performance
tunes each partition and Robot/MONITOR collects and reports the results
of the tuning efforts.
If you choose
to use Robot/MONITOR’s
graphical user interface, you can graph statistics collected
by Robot/MONITOR and Robot/AUTOTUNE on your PC. You also
have the option of installing and operating Robot/MONITOR
in “network” mode. This option
works with Robot/NETWORK, allowing you to collect and report
on multiple partitions in a network environment to get the big picture
of your network’s
performance.
Interfaces to Robot/SCHEDULE and Robot/NETWORK
provide the tools you need to run a fully automated (unattended)
operations.
Robot/AUTOTUNE makes the most of the resources available to it. It
also recognizes when more resources become available. Robot/LPAR lets
you move System i resources from one partition to another, by command,
according to your processing needs. Robot/LPAR can move I/O resources
(such as tapes drives, displays, modems, and others) and performance
resources (processors and memory) between partitions to make the most
of existing resources and meet service level agreements (SLAs). Resources
can be moved interactively (without signing on to the HMC) or on a
schedule by scheduling the commands in Robot/SCHEDULE.
