Solution 2
Automate
message handling and resource monitoring to achieve enterprise
management
To achieve enterprise management, you need System i monitoring
software and more. The System i platform is highly message
driven. Nearly every event triggers a message before it
occurs, while it is occurring, or after it occurs. And,
sometimes it generates all three! In this message-heavy
environment, the first thing to tackle is monitoring important
System i message queues. Your goal is to automate:
- message handling (including suppressing unimportant
messages and automating replies—either standard or determined
by the message content)
- and message
redirection and escalation (including forwarding
messages to experts, requiring responses to messages
[such as tape mount and paper out], and making sure important
messages are seen)
The foundation for this capability
is Robot/CONSOLE. But Robot/CONSOLE is more than
just a message management tool. Not only does it monitor
message queues, but it also monitors CPU usage, FTP activity,
the security audit journal, and the system history log
(QHST). It performs procedures in reaction to messages
and events—such
as initiating recovery procedures, paging experts (via
Robot/ALERT), and redirecting messages automatically.
Robot/ALERT and Robot/NETWORK
are also key
When you run Robot/CONSOLE, message management software, with Robot/NETWORK,
network management software, you can redirect messages to message
centers on different systems (or different partitions of the same
system). In fact, Robot/NETWORK allows you to monitor system operator
messages for your entire network of System i systems at a single
workstation. Now, that's System i monitoring!
Add Robot/ALERT, messaging software, so you can receive a pager
or e-mail message when there are messages waiting to be answered
anywhere in the network. If you have a two-way pager and your Robot/CONSOLE
message center pages you, you can answer messages on the spot (without
dialing in, logging on, and so on).
Monitor SNMP traps to achieve enterprise
management
You also may want
to add Robot/TRAPPER to monitor an even wider sphere. Robot/TRAPPER
processes SNMP traps from network devices and
converts them into System i messages for Robot/CONSOLE to
handle. This System i-based monitoring software also checks
the status of your network devices and applications at pre-set
intervals. Let software on your most reliable platform monitor
less reliable devices.
