Automated LPAR System i Resource Movement

You have partitioned your System i and gotten it organized the way you want it to be. Now you need a way to move resources quickly, on command or on a schedule. Robot/LPAR, the resource movement software for the System i, comes to the rescue.

Move Resources Among Partitions For Efficient Processing
With Robot/LPAR, you can move System i resources from one partition to another, by command, according to your processing needs. For example, if you've created a partition for sales and another for production, you may want more resources available for the sales partition during the day and for the production partition at night. Robot/LPAR works hand-in-hand with the Hardware Management Console (HMC) in an IBM System i environment to move resources where they are needed.

Robot/LPAR can move the following resources:

  • I/O resources, including tape drives, displays, modems, and others.
  • Performance resources (processors and memory).

You can also monitor or change partition status from a Robot/LPAR panel without using the HMC.

Set Resource Levels To Meet SLA Requirements
If you have a service level agreement (SLA) or something similar, Robot/LPAR lets you set fixed levels for processor capacity and memory to meet the requirement. This can be accomplished only if the resources are available.

Schedule Resource Movement With Robot/SCHEDULE
Robot/LPAR works with Robot/SCHEDULE, the job scheduling and batch management software, to schedule resource movements according to your processing needs. Just set up the jobs containing the commands to move resources and let Robot/SCHEDULE do the rest.

Robot/SCHEDULE's cross-system reactivity lets you schedule device movement across partitions based on job completion.

Add Robot/AUTOTUNE To Maximize Moved Memory
Robot/AUTOTUNE, the System i performance monitoring and tuning package, works with Robot/LPAR to tune moved memory. After Robot/LPAR moves memory to a partition, Robot/AUTOTUNE allocates it to the subsystems and memory pools that need it.
