InterMapper Platforms/Operating Systems

InterMapper is the only network monitoring software that runs on all major platforms. We support all current versions of these platforms:

  • Windows 7/8 and Windows Server 2012/2008/2003
(Note: IPv6 support requires Windows 7, Server 2008, or newer)
  • Mac OS X 10.7 or newer (Intel processor required)
  • Linux distributions*: Red Hat 5/6/7, Ubuntu 10.04/12.04/14.04, Debian 6/7, SuSE 11
  • Solaris 10/11 on SPARC or x64

*Customers who install InterMapper on a headless server will need to use remote desktop access program that supports remote sounds or a copy of InterMapper RemoteAccess.

InterMapper System Requirements

InterMapper's system requirements are quite frugal. The major influence is the number of devices that you want to monitor—the more devices, the more CPU, RAM, and disk space you will need. The numbers below are relevant for all operating systems.

Number of Devices CPU RAM Disk Space With IM Database
up to 100 devices Any 1 GB 20 GB 80 GB
200 devices Dual Core 1 GB 40 GB 100 GB
500 devices Dual Core 2 GB 100 GB 350 GB
1,000 devices Quad Core 4 GB 200 GB 700 GB
More devices Quad Core Contact support.intermapper@helpsystems.com

The disk column shows the amount of disk space needed for the program and the chart data. The "Using IM Database" column shows the total amount of disk space needed if you wish to use InterMapper Database. The disk sizes listed retain 30-second raw data samples for 30 days, and summarized data for 2 years.

System Requirements for InterMapper Flows

InterMapper Flows supports Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and UNIX operating systems:

  • Windows 7/8 and Windows Server 2012/2008/2003
  • Mac OS X 10.7 or newer (Intel processor required)
  • Linux distributions: Red Hat 5/6/7, Ubuntu 10.04/12.04/14.04, Debian 6/7, SuSE 11
  • Solaris 10/11 on SPARC or x64

System Requirements

InterMapper Flows requires a fairly powerful computer; both processor power and the amount of RAM are important considerations. Although you may perform initial testing using a VM (virtual machine) environment, we do not recommend that you use a VM in production because the performance is frequently not good enough.

InterMapper Flows benefits from having a large amount of RAM for its database cache. Use a 64-bit Windows, Macintosh, Linux, or UNIX system if you wish to allocate more than 1.5 GBytes of RAM for the cache.

This table indicates the recommended system requirements for various flow rates:

Flows/Hour Recommended Minimum Specs
1 million Dual core, 4 GB of Ram
10 million Quad or dual core, 16 GB of RAM
Requires 64-bit Windows, Linux, UNIX, or Macintosh hardware
100 million Quad core, 3GHz, 65 GB of RAM, RAID storage
Requires 64-bit Windows, Linux, UNIX, or Macintosh hardware

System Requirements for InterMapper RemoteAccess

InterMapper RemoteAccess supports Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux and UNIX operating systems:

  • Windows 7/8 and Windows Server 2012/2008/2003
  • Mac OS X 10.7 or newer (Intel processor required)
  • Linux distributions: Red Hat 5/6/7, Ubuntu 10.04/12.04/14.04, Debian 6/7, SuSE11
  • Solaris 10/11 on SPARC or x64

Java 1.7 is required and is included with RemoteAccess and InterMapper on Windows and Mac OS X. In general, any computer capable of running Mac OS X 10.7 or a 1 GHz Pentium or faster Windows 7/XP/Vista/2003/2008 or UNIX computer with 512 MBytes of RAM will support InterMapper RemoteAccess.
