The World's Leader in IBM iSeries Software Solutions

Wow, Power 7!

What a journey the AS/400 has gone through! The latest incarnation is the Power 7. Have you seen the specifications on these new 750, 770, and 780 boxes? IBM i customers have plenty of upward capacity to play with. The 750, the replacement for the 550, can have as many as 32 processors and a CPW rating of around 170,000. (In contrast, the Power 6 550 had 8 processors and a CPW rating of about 40,000.)

You hear manufacturers talk about dual-core and quad-core processors. The newest IBM i server can have eight core processors. For those still trying to get a grip on dual-core, IBM has blown this away with the 8-core (or, as I like to call it, octocore). Eight processors on one card share the workload to deliver extremely high levels of CPW.

What does this mean to you? I think it means more consolidation, plus fewer and smaller hardware footprints in the data center. This is amazing when you compare it to the Windows world. Those little servers have so many heat and capacity issues, they can force you to build new data centers. The IBM Power Systems Servers running IBM i are not “eating up” the walls of your data center like other servers. So, you might want to reconsider your investments in Power Systems. These newest servers can take you well into the middle of the decade, delivering availability, security, and a lower total cost of ownership.

Look at this technology, it can save you the headache of technology that consumes your precious power supply and space. Go Power 7 and experience the positive impact on your data center.
