Robot/TRAPPER

Robot/TRAPPER

With routers, Web sites, servers, firewalls, security equipment, and countless other devices and applications in your network—not to mention those in other states or countries—how do you monitor them all successfully? Robot/TRAPPER receives SNMP event notifications (traps) from network devices, converts them into System i messages, and checks the status of your network devices and applications.

  • Checks the status of your critical devices at regular intervals
  • Finds out quickly if a device or application is unresponsive
  • Converts and displays SNMP event notifications
  • Monitors SNMP traps

Get a handle on your network devices

Robot/TRAPPER is a key element in our automation strategy that allows you to monitor your networked devices effectively from your IBM System i.

Robot/TRAPPER:

  • Works with existing networks—no need to purchase additional hardware
  • Leverages the omnipresence of SNMP event notifications and converts them into usable System i messages.
  • Optimizes the ability to talk to any network device with an IP address.

SNMP Trap Monitoring
Most network devices have SNMP agents running on them. These SNMP agents send event notifications (called traps) to a management system. The trap manager in Robot/TRAPPER receives these traps and converts them into iSeries messages, which can be automated.

Device Status Monitoring
Once a device is defined to Robot/TRAPPER, you can check the status (ping) of the device at regular, predetermined intervals automatically. You can assign your critical devices the highest ping priority so they are pinged frequently. If a device is inactive, Robot/TRAPPER notifies you

MIB Compilation
Robot/TRAPPER’s Management Information Base (MIB) compiler translates MIB source files from any vendor into iSeries messages. In addition, the MIB compiler stores all translated data in a database for future use and assigns a unique message ID to each SNMP trap found in the MIB source file.

Robot/TRAPPER offers abundant possibilities for monitoring your network, whatever devices it includes. The more you use it, the more uses you’ll find. Consider these ideas:

Robot/ALERT

  • Team Robot/TRAPPER with Robot/ALERT to send a message to your operators when your critical network devices fail. Send a pager message to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and e-mail your Web team if your Web site is no longer available. Robot/ALERT also can e-mail your Web team when the site is up and running again.

Robot/CONSOLE

  • If a network device does not respond to a ping, Robot/TRAPPER uses Robot/CONSOLE to notify you. Assign your critical devices the highest ping priority so they are pinged more frequently. When a critical device is unavailable, you’ll know immediately and can respond accordingly.
  • Most network devices have SNMP agents running on them. The SNMP agents send event notifications, called traps, to a management system. The trap manager in Robot/TRAPPER receives the traps from your servers, PCs, Web sites, data collection devices—any device that sends SNMP traps—and converts them into System i messages, which can be automated using Robot/CONSOLE, Help/Systems’ message management software. Robot/CONSOLE escalates the messages according to your established protocol so emergencies are always handled properly.
  • Use Robot/TRAPPER to monitor your Domino® server and notify you immediately if it goes down. Robot/TRAPPER also receives the SNMP traps you create in the Lotus Notes Administrator for Domino events unique to your company, and can convert them into iSeries messages. Use Robot/TRAPPER to monitor your UPS hardware and notify you if it switches to battery backup, or from battery to diesel power.

Robot/SCHEDULE Enterprise

  • Team Robot/TRAPPER with Robot/SCHEDULE Enterprise, our enterprise job scheduler, to respond to events and automate the recovery processes on your Windows, UNIX, and Linux servers.

Robot/NETWORK

  • Team Robot/TRAPPER with Robot/NETWORK, our network management software, to view and close Sytem i SNMP events from your enterprise monitoring package—Tivoli, HP OpenView, Netcool, and more.
